Theological Guardrails

The doctrinal convictions and non-negotiable boundaries that govern everything OurLight Ministries builds, writes, and uses AI to help produce.

Effective date: August 31, 2026

Overview

OurLight Ministries exists to anchor believers in God’s Word, cultivate Spirit-led rhythm, and direct the heart toward Christ and the local church. Everything we build, from devotional and study packets to the Scripture Alignment Tool, is produced under a written governance stack that keeps our theology consistent and keeps AI subordinate to Scripture in how we use it.

This page is modeled on our internal governance and states it here as the guardrails driving what we’re building. It doesn’t introduce anything new. It gathers what already governs us into one plain statement.

Key Points

  • Scripture and the local church stand above everything we build. No document, tool, or AI system here outranks them.
  • Our theological posture is Orthodox Christian evangelical: Scripture supremacy, Christ-centered teaching, pastoral sobriety, and the expository tradition. We look to teachers like John MacArthur, John Piper, R.C. Sproul, Tim Keller, and R. Kent Hughes as reference points, never as authorities equal to Scripture.
  • Every output is measured against the same three tests, whether a human or AI assisted in drafting it: Scripture, Fruit, and Spirit.
  • Certain content is never produced here, including prophecy claims, speculative doctrine, emotional manipulation, and psychological or therapeutic coaching.
  • No doctrinal content goes public without a human reading and approving it first.

Our Theological Foundation

OurLight operates within an Orthodox Christian evangelical theological framework: Scripture supremacy, Christ-centered teaching, pastoral sobriety, and the influence of the expository tradition. We look to teachers like John MacArthur, John Piper, R.C. Sproul, Tim Keller, and R. Kent Hughes as examples of that tradition, not as sources of authority in themselves. Their value to us is that they model careful handling of the text, not that their conclusions settle a question Scripture leaves open.

This foundation shapes every packet, study, and tool we produce, and it shapes how we use AI to help produce them.

What Never Moves

A short list of commitments sit above every other decision in this ministry. They cannot be revised by preference, convenience, or growth pressure:

  • Christ-centered: every output points to Jesus, not to a platform, a personality, or a technique.
  • Scripture-rooted: every claim is grounded in or clearly derived from the text.
  • Spirit-led: the ministry moves by obedience, not by optimization.
  • Kingdom-focused: the goal is the health of Christ’s church, not the growth of OurLight.
  • Accountable to the church: nothing here operates outside the correction of the local church and pastoral authority.
  • Transparent and humble: how we build, what AI does, and where our limits are stated plainly, not buried in fine print.
  • Free forever, ministry-owned: study packets, devotional packets, and the Scripture Alignment Tool carry no paywall or commercial license, now or ever. If OurLight ever holds revenue (a future store, for example), it belongs strictly to the ministry, never to an individual.

How We Test Everything We Produce

Before anything leaves our production process, it passes three tests, applied the same way whether a human or AI assisted in drafting it:

  • The Scripture Test: Is there a clear Scripture anchor? Is every claim grounded in or derived from the text?
  • The Fruit Test: Does the content tend toward humility, repentance, gratitude, trust, and love? Is it free of manipulation, prophecy claims, speculative doctrine, and psychological coaching?
  • The Spirit Test: Does the output honor Christ, edify God’s people, and point toward the local church?

All three have to pass. Content that is technically Scripture-anchored but manipulative in tone, or pastorally warm but doctrinally loose, does not clear the bar.

How We Handle Reasoning Beyond the Text

Explaining a passage well sometimes requires reasoning that goes beyond what the text explicitly says. We call that INFERENCE, and we treat it differently depending on who the content is for.

In self-alignment tools, where a reader is testing their own reasoning against Scripture, every non-biblical inference is labeled, without exception, so the person can see exactly where our reasoning ends and Scripture begins.

In produced ministry content, sourced and mainstream theological synthesis, consistent with the doctrinal tradition named above, is expected teaching content and is not tagged inline. The standard here is stricter, not looser: anything that would honestly require an INFERENCE label, genuine speculation beyond the text, is reworked or cut before it is ever published.

What We Will Never Produce

Regardless of format or audience, certain content categories are permanently off-limits at OurLight:

  • Prophecy claims, or any language implying a direct word from God beyond Scripture.
  • Speculative doctrine, or resolving disputed theological questions on our own authority.
  • Emotional manipulation, used to drive engagement, giving, or action.
  • Psychological or therapeutic coaching, including grief processing, trauma language, or emotional coaching, which belongs to trained counselors and the local church, not a ministry tool.
  • Prayers written on a reader’s behalf.
  • Paywalls or commercial licenses attached to core ministry content.

Human Review Before Anything Public

No AI self-check substitutes for a person reading doctrinal content and approving it. Until a pastor or elder is formally named to the role, David serves as the ministry’s interim doctrinal reviewer and personally reads and approves any doctrinal content before it is published. This is a standing, explicit gate, not an assumption of trust in the tools.

Where This Sits in Our Governance

These guardrails aren’t the top of the chain; they sit inside it. Scripture and the local church carry an authority that no document in this ministry can grant itself, and that authority stands above everything we build: Scripture, then Christ, then the local church, then every tool and text that follows. Inside our own internal governance, no lower layer of documentation ever overrides a higher one. If anything in it were ever found to contradict Scripture, Scripture wins and the document gets corrected, not the other way around.
